Project title: Epigenetics of periodontitis: DNA methylation in disease development and as a potential therapeutic target
 
Project description:
Project is carried out within the First Team programme of the Foundation for Polish Science. The aim of this project is to analyze pathological changes in DNA methylation in gingival cells from patients with periodontitis, identify the influence of Porphyromonas gingialis on DNA methylation in these cells and characterize its biological consequences. Studies performed within this project will not only improve our understanding of this disease, but can also facilitate identification of new therapeutic targets, constituting a foundation for testing new drug classes in the treatment of periodontal disease in the future.  
 
Key responsibilities include:
  • Comparison of DNA methylation profiles, expression of methylation-regulating enzymes, inflammatory and antimicrobial responses between primary gingival fibroblasts derived form healthy donors and periodontitis patients.
  • Study of the influence of DNA methyltransferase inhibitors on the viability, inflammatory and antibacterial response of periodontal ligament fibroblasts.
Profile of candidates/requirements:
  1. BSc degree (or equivalent) in biotechnology, biochemistry or any related field of life sciences obtained before the beginning of the stipend contract (candidates who have not obtained BSc degree before the application deadline must provide a written confirmation of the planned date of BSc completion from their supervisors). 
  2. Strong experience in eukaryotic cell culture and in some of the basic cell biology techniques (qPCR, ELISA and/or Western Blot). 
  3. Experience in anaerobic bacterial cultures would be an advantage. 
  4. Fluency in written and spoken English. 
  5. Good skills in work organization, planning and keeping experimental track record. 
  6. High level of independence, determination and reliability, willingness to work outside of standard office hours. 
  7. Ability to work in a team.

  5. Successful candidate will provide a copy of the BSc diploma before the beginning of the stipend contract.
