Project title: Targeting deregulated expression of anti-apoptotic proteins belonging to the Bcl-2 family in neutrophils as a potential therapy against periodontal disease. In vitro and in vivo analysis. Project is carried out within the First Team programme of the Foundation for Polish Science

Project description: The aim of this project is to analyze pathological changes in neutrophils and identify the influence of virulence factors of Porphyromonas gingialis on neutrophil survival and pro-inflammatory functions and characterize its biological consequences in vitro and in vivo. Studies performed within this project will not only improve our understanding of periodontal disease, but can also facilitate identification of new therapeutic targets, constituting a foundation for testing new drug classes in the treatment in the future.

Key responsibilities include:
  1. In vitro studies on HoxB8 neutrophils of P. gingivalis virulence factors influence on survival and functions.
  2. Analysis on Bcl-2-like anti-apoptotic proteins inhibitors on neutrophils survival and functions in vitro
  3. Determination of the role of P. gingivalis infection and inflammation in vivo in two mouse models of periodontitis.
  4. Analysis of application of Bcl-2-like inhibitors on development of periodontal disease in vivo.
  5. Ex vivo analysis of neutrophils survival and functions isolated from human blood treated with Bcl-2-like inhibitors.
