Job offer in the Department of Microbiology

Technician position (full-time, fixed-term) in the Department of Microbiology available from 1st July 2018. The closing date for applications is the 23rd May 2018.

Project title: “Deregulated apoptosis of neutrophils as a potential mechanism underlying pathobiology of periodontitis”
 
Project description:
During this project we will study the molecular mechanisms of deregulation of the neutrophils in the periodontitis disease during the infection with bacterium P. gingivalis. Importantly, we will use a novel in vitro approach, that does not involve the animal work since this ingenious method allows to study neutrophil survival and their function in a very precise and controlled way outside organism. Obtained results will show, whether the inhibition of the neutrophil survival and their function may help to cure the periodontitis patients in the future.
 
Key responsibilities include: 
  1. Analyzing impact of lipopolisaccharide isolated from bacteria P. gingivalis on expression of anti-apoptotic proteins in murine and human neutrophils as well as 
  2. Analyzing survival and functions of neutrophils.
Profile of candidates/requirements:
  1. Possess at least a Master degree in biotechnology, biochemistry or any related field of life sciences
  2. Have a working experience in a laboratory environment in academia or industry
  3. Have a strong experience in preparing protein samples from bacterial or cell cultures for Western Blot and ELISA 
  4. Experience in cultures of bacteria (for example P. gingivalis) would be an advantage 
  5. Experience in cultures of progenitor cells or neutrophils or other phagocytes would be an advantage
  6. Experience of preparation of samples for and data collection and analysis from FACS ("Flow jo” software) would be an advantage, or a willingness to learn those techniques
  7. Have good written and oral communication skills in English 
  8. Have good skills of work management and experimental record keeping
  9. Show a good level of independence, determination and reliability
  10. Able to work collaboratively
